Oklahoma Gin
Oklahoma Gin is a Gin Rummy variant. If you’ve never
played Gin Rummy before, but you’re an expert at playing
Oklahoma Gin, then you’ll be a prop at
Gin Rummy, and
vice-versa. Why? These two card games are extremely similar,
with only a few minor changes in how the game is played.
In this game, whichever card is drawn as to begin the face-up
discard pile, is the number of unmatched cards allowed in your
hand in which you are allowed to knock with. For example, if a
four is drawn at the beginning of the game, you are only allowed
to have up to four cards that are unmatched. Anything over is
not valid. If you draw a face card, they’re worth ten. If this
card happens to be a spade, all scores in the deal are doubled.
In order to win the game, you must have a total scored of one
hundred and fifty points, rather than one hundred. Some people
play the game where if the original face up card is an ace, you
can only knock if you’ve gone gin.
Some people also play the game where if a person undercuts the
knocker, they get an extra box as well as the undercut bonus
points. And, a player who goes gin gets two extra boxes.
However, these extra boxed do not count towards the final score.
But, at the end of the game, these boxes translate into twenty
to twenty-five points, depending on how the players decide to
play. These points add on to the points a player gets for the
number of hands they win.
You see, both Gin Rummy and Oklahoma Gin are very similar games.
If you are a master at one, you’ll be genius in the other. The
change in rules from each other is not very complicated, and
most of the rules in Oklahoma Gin are, as you read, optional.
