Originated in the United States, the popular Gin Rummy card game was created by Elwood T. Baker and his son in 1909. The Baker’s took the 18th-century card game of Whiskey Poker and extracted some of its rules and regulations to create this now world-wide favorite game, Gin Rummy. This game is popular among the teenage and young adult generation and the older generation as well.

Gin RummyGin Rummy is typically two player card game played with a deck of fifty-two cards. The most recommended deck of cards to use in this game is an Anglo-American deck. An Anglo-American deck of cards is the most common deck of cards found today, also known as the French deck, and carries thirteen cards of each suit. The ranking of cards in the Gin Rummy card game from lowest to highest are as follows:

Ace 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack Queen King

Each card has a value assigned to it. Jacks, Queens, and Kings are all worth ten points. An Ace is worth one point, and the number cards are all worth the number the card displays.

To start the game, the first dealer is chosen at random, however you and your partner decide to choose is fair. Once the dealer is randomly chosen for the first game, the dealer switches with his/her partner for the second game and, as the game progresses, each new game means you alternate the dealer. For the Gin Rummy card game to begin, after the deck of cards is shuffled, twenty-one cards should be in play—ten to each player, and one face up to begin the discard pile. The rest of the deck is placed face down beside the discard pile to form the stock.

The object of the Gin Rummy card game is to collect a hand where you can combine most/all of your cards into sets and runs. The point value of the cards you can not combine should be low. In case you don’t know what a set or a run is, a run is three or more consecutive numbers of the same suit. For instance, if you have a one card, a two card, and a three card all in the spades suit, you have a run. A set is three to four cards of the same number. For instance, if you have four cards with the number 3 on them (one from each suit) you have a set. Unlike most other card games, you can not use the same card twice in a set or a run. For instance, you have a seven of clubs that you could use in a set and a run. You can only choose to use it in one or the other, not both.
